American Girl Doll Horse Blanket Tutorial AG031

Olivia went to Disney World in January, 2015 so I was able to borrow her AG Horse while she was away.  I found this pretty plaid fabric in my stash – you can’t see it, but it is full of sparkles that don’t come off!  The reverse side is some type of fleece that I found in my stash as well.  I could only find one pattern on the net for an AG Horse blanket.  It didn’t fit Olivia’s horse so I created my own pattern.

Cut out plaid as pattern.  Lay it on top of a piece of fleece with wrong sides together. Cut it out a little bigger than the plaid – that is just to be sure I know I will catch it when I do my basting.  Pin well.

I put my presser foot at the edge of the fabric then moved the needle one notch to the right.  Baste together.

I want to finish the edges with the serger.  I changed my upper looper to wooly nylon thread and decreased the tension to about 1.5.  I increased the tension on the lower looper to 4 (my normal setting was 2 and I used regular thread).  I set my stitch length to 1.5.  I let the serger do the trimming of the fleece.

Quickly press with a press cloth as the wooly nylon thread will melt. Pin 2-1/2” of 1/8” elastic into a loop on one front.

Stitch in place.

Add a button to the other side.

Here is the reverse side.

  1. Is this black horse an actual American Girl brand or is it an Our Generation from Target? I am having the same problem only one other tutorial pattern for a similar horse, but I think it may be too small as well. Your pattern looks like it might be the best and almost the same horse. Ours is an Our Generation. Thank you for your help.

  2. This is my granddaughters horse. I believe she got it from Target. I have the horse from Walmart. It fits it just fine too. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. So glad I found this tutorial. I almost went with the other. I checked the fit and yup it wouldn't have fit our horse either. Santa would've screwed up.
