Craft - How to make Flags using a Square Punch and Workshop Cards

Before I show you the cards I made at Joanne’s SU Workshop for February, I would like to show you how to make a flag or a flag end.  Stamp and cut out a rectangle – any width will work.  Mark a light pencil line where you want the flag end to be.

 

It helps to mark the center width of the rectangle too.  Align one short end of the cardstock in the corner of your square punch – I used SU!’s 13/8” square punch.

 

Presto!  Takes a bit of practice but it is that easy!

 

Erase your pencil marks.  Ok, on to the cards.

Embellishments: button from the Sycamore Street Ribbon and Buttons Pack (SAB), needle, thread, Lots of Tags Sizzlets, Lacey Brocade Embossing Folder, Everyday Enchantment Organdy 1/8” ribbon in Calypso Coral.

Recipe - Cowgirl Cookies

 

 

Instead of giving out treat bags or party favors at my granddaughter’s 8^th birthday party, my daughter followed Bakereall’s tutorial on how put these Cowgirl cookies together.  Bakerealla has a PDF on her blog for the tags for either a cowgirl or cowboy – just print them out and punch!  Super cute and a great idea for any little horse enthusiast!  I have heard that 'cookies in a jar' mixes don't last long - something about the baking soda mixed in the flour.  So don’t make these too early then give them right away!
I had my grandsons over so we decided to follow the instructions for the recipe to make these cookies that is included in the PDF.

 

They each had to take a turn at stirring.

 

Then came time to roll them in balls.

 

Since there was no more room on the cookie sheet, they thought they should just eat the remaining dough - that goes without saying, right??

 

Freshly baked - what is left of them!  Yummy!

Sewing - The Monster Knee Patch

My daughter spotted something similar to this on Pinterest.  Isn’t it just the cutest??  What little guy wouldn’t love this!!  Love it!  Let’s do it!

Open the seam on the jeans that has not been topstitched.  Don’t make the opening too small – far better to have lots of room to work in.  I stuck pins at approximately the size I wanted to make the patch – this measured 7” square.
 

Draw a mouth opening on the jeans and cut out.
 

From a t-shirt, I cut 2 thicknesses each for the top and bottom teeth, fused them together with fusible web and traced some jaggedy teeth!
 

Cut out the teeth and topstitched.  I also patched the two sides of the mouth that were ripped.
 

Pin one to the top and one to the bottom part of the mouth.
 

Zigzag around the opening catching the teeth – this is where you really appreciate that side seam being open!
 

Since I didn’t have anything heavy enough to make the inside patch, I used some light weight fabric and used fusible web to adhere it to the right side of the denim to give it more stability.  I cut everything 7” square since that is what I wanted the patch to be.
 

Serge or zigzag on three sides – the fourth side will be caught in the side seam of the jeans.
 

Pin to the mouth opening – I like to place a book or in this case, I used my ruler while pinning so I would not catch the back leg with my pins.
 

I stitched twice around the opening.
 

Turn jeans inside out.  Pin around the outside of the patch and sew in place – I straight stitched first then went around again with a zigzag.
 

Trace two larger circles from white t-shirt and two smaller ones from a scrap of denim.  I used the cap off the vitamin C bottle for the white and this flashlight for the denim. Sure hope the disappearing ink pen I used really does disappear!
 

Zigzag the denim to the white.
 

Pin eyes to the jeans and stitch in place.

Close the side seam and there you have it!

Can’t wait to see what happens once the jeans get washed a few times.  I think the fraying will really add to this little monster!

Sewing - How to Patch Jeans

Welcome to another Sewing project.
My grandson brought over a pair of jeans.  “Can you fix this Gramma?’  Of course I can.  I thought I’d share how I do my jean patching especially if it is just a small hole.

 

Cut a patch of denim bigger than the hole. Using pinking shears, trim all four sides of the patch or you could serge all the raw edges. Press flat.
Cover the right side of the patch with fusible web. Use a scrap of fabric to cover your work surface and to protect your iron.  Sometimes it can be tricky to remove the paper backing from the glue.  A little trick – scratch it with your scissors.

 

Now you can easily grab the paper and remove it.

 

 

Cover your ham with a cloth.  Insert into your jeans to give yourself a rounded area to attach the patch.

 

 

Place the fusible web patch on top of the hole.

 

Set your iron directly down onto the patch and hold for a moment. Lift the iron and set the iron it down for about 10 seconds. The patch should now be cleanly attached to the underside of the jeans.

Turn the jeans right sides out and trim any long threads from the hole. 

 

Sew with a straight stitch all around the perimeter of your patch. This secures the patch to the jeans.

 

From the right side, zig-zag around the perimeter of the hole opening, securing the fabric around the hole so that it doesn't get caught on other objects.  Using thread that matches the jeans would make it more invisible than the gray I used.
